We want to make sure you have an unforgettable with us learning how to get the most of your camera. Please find a selection of frequently asked questions regarding our photography workshops below.
Which animals are involved in the workshops?
We aim to include lemurs, chimpanzees, brilliant birds, red pandas, meerkats, pelicans, otters and penguins. Please note, that we are unable to guarantee any specific animals on the day due to animal welfare issues. If any animals are off-show, we will replace this part of the day with an equivalent opportunity.
What photography equipment do I need to bring with me on the day?
The photographic equipment you need to bring is entirely your own choice. Participants shouldn’t feel that they can’t attend a workshop unless they have certain items of equipment. The workshops are more about teaching guests how to obtain the best results from the equipment that they already happen to own.
The following list of equipment is just a suggestion:
- A digital SLR or 'Bridge' camera with the instruction manual.
- Spare camera battery and memory card.
- A telephoto zoom lens in the 70-200mm or 70-300mm range. But if you have any longer lenses up to 400-600mm then feel free to bring these too.
- A wide angle or wide angle zoom lens in the 16-35mm range for full-frame cameras or 10-20mm range for 'cropped sensor' cameras.
- Lens hoods for all lenses.
- Rain cover for cameras or polythene bin liners that can be used to protect equipment in wet weather.
Additional items you may wish to bring:
- A beanbag for supporting long lenses on enclosure barriers etc. Home-made ones filled with dried peas, grain or bird seed are fine.
- A tripod with a remote release for firing the camera.
- A polarising filter to remove the surface glare from the water when photographing penguins from above.
- A 'fisheye' lens for photographing penguins underwater.
How many people can be booked in for an experience?

Will the workshop be cancelled if the weather’s bad?
We plan to go ahead with the workshops even if it’s raining. Participants need to make sure they bring appropriate clothing for the weather and make sure their camera and equipment is properly protected from the elements. Occasionally in the case of severe weather where we would need to shut the Zoo we can book you for another suitable date or arrange a refund. This is a very rare occurrence but should it happen we would endeavour to provide as much notice as possible to all participants.
