That was quick! Baby hippo born at Edinburgh Zoo

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's (RZSS) Edinburgh Zoo has proudly announced the arrival of an adorable pygmy hippo calf born to parents Otto and Gloria.  

The youngster arrived on Friday (31 July) and is currently being cared for by Gloria with the pair spending this time feeding, resting and bonding.

Jonny Appleyard, hoofstock team leader at Edinburgh Zoo said: "It has been a really exciting few days for the team and we are all delighted to see Gloria and her calf doing so well. Our main aim right now is to give them some private time until they show signs they are ready to meet the world."

Gloria is no stranger to motherhood having given birth to daughters Amara in 2021 and Haggis in 2024 who became an internet sensation.

The news comes hot on the heels of the wildlife conservation charity announcing Gloria's pregnancy on social media. Keepers and vets at the zoo had estimated the calf would arrive sometime in August.

Jonny added: "We were expecting a week or two of calm after announcing Gloria's pregnancy but nature had other ideas. It was a real surprise to come in and find a new face tucked up with mum. We hope to be able to confirm the wee one’s gender following upcoming health checks.”

Gloria and baby are having some well-deserved rest with visitors able to start spotting the pair in the coming days.  Visitors should check the zoo’s social media channels for news on when the Pygmy hippo house will be open for well-wishers.
