A bespoke penguin-themed playpark designed exclusively for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) has been opened at Edinburgh Zoo. The giant penguin, standing at an impressive 4.9 metres tall and weighing approximately four tonnes, is the only one of its kind in the world.

Designed for children of all ages and abilities to play together, the sculpture has been specially created to inspire imaginative, active and inclusive play. Developed by KOMPAN for the wildlife conservation charity, the playpark combines striking visual design with a wide range of interactive features.

Beccy Angus, head of discovery and learning at RZSS, said: “Inspired by our world-famous penguins, the new playpark at Penguins Rock creates a direct link between play and learning. We wanted to build something that families would remember, talk about and return to. It is completely unique and allows little ones to discover the magic of wildlife, creating an unforgettable experience.

“Integrated features include an optic panel, tic-tac-toe panel, music panel, a drawing wall and talk tubes. The park offers accessible opportunities for individual, group play and families to play together helping children communicate, engage their senses and self-regulate in a fun and inclusive environment.”

Crafted from natural Robinia hardwood, the playpark invites children to climb, balance, slide and explore its form freely. Unlike traditional playground equipment, the giant penguin encourages open-ended play, meaning children can create their own stories, use it as a meeting point or take on physical challenges in a way that suits their imagination.

The new area, funded by the Nancie Massey Charitable Trust, provides a vibrant space for families to pause, play and connect, reinforcing Edinburgh Zoo’s commitment to creating engaging, educational and inclusive experiences for all visitors.
