How Edinburgh Zoo’s Giant Lanterns could be the mood boost we all need this January

As the winter blues set in and daylight is still in short supply, Edinburgh Zoo’s Giant Lanterns trail is proving to be a powerful antidote. With light long recognised for its positive effect on mood during the dark winter months, the wildlife conservation charity’s visitors are feeling the benefits first hand. One described the larger-than-life illuminated sculptures as “the most beautiful thing I have ever seen”.
The trail, which has already welcomed over 60,000 people, takes visitors under the sea on a dazzling interactive ocean-deep journey. Scotland’s only lantern trail has already become a highlight of the winter season for many. Including over 600 lanterns, some towering 20 feet high, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s (RZSS) trail features marine wildlife, legendary sea creatures and ocean mysteries. The perfect winter evening out, the trail runs on selected nights until 22 February 2026, giving a final chance to experience the magic before it finishes.
Visitors have been quick to share how the experience has lifted their spirits during the darkest weeks of the year, with 82%* saying they would recommend it to others. Combining fresh air and awe-inspiring illuminations, Giant Lanterns offers a rare chance to slow down, switch off and enjoy a moment of wonder.
Couples, families and groups of friends alike have praised the immersive atmosphere and sense of escapism the trail provides. One group described it as a welcome escape from reality: “It was an absolutely fantastic night! We are so glad we did this. Our three grandsons loved it - we were in a world of fantasy and away from technology for the evening.” Another described the lanterns as “stunning, and every installation was breathtaking”, and one visitor commented, “I liked the calming music that accompanied the installations, it encouraged me to slow down and enjoy the trail more”.
Lindsay Ross, events and experiences manager at Edinburgh Zoo said: “Whether it’s a family night out, a catch-up with friends or a chance to do something different with a partner, Giant Lanterns is proving that a little light can go a long way in boosting winter wellbeing. It really does provide a sense of escapism and is a powerful way to combat the January blues, while supporting wildlife conservation at the same time.”
Entry is open from 4:45pm with the last entry at 8pm.
