The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) celebrated the 20th birthday of its male giant panda Yang Guang yesterday at Edinburgh Zoo.

Keepers at the wildlife conservation charity treated the UK’s only male giant panda, whose name means sunshine, to a box full of carrots, bamboo and apples. The box was decorated by children being supported by Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity (ECHC) to celebrate Yang Guang’s last birthday in the capital before returning to China later this year.

Edinburgh Zoo’s female giant panda Tian Tian will also receive a decorated box on her birthday later this month.

RZSS has pledged to enable more than 100 communities to better protect nature by 2030. As part of that work the charity offers free tickets to families with children being treated at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young people.
