The application process is now open for the Science Summer School 2026 programme.

Our Science Summer School is a programme for 16–18-year-olds introducing the role of a modern zoo through a weeklong course focusing on practical activities including enclosure design, animal behaviour observations, collection planning and zoo veterinary practices.

Throughout the week, students will engage with a variety of specialists from the RZSS family. This culminates in a group presentation.

Edinburgh Zoo 2026 dates:

  • Monday 27 July – Friday 31 July
  • Monday 3 August – Friday 7 August

For further information please contact education@rzss.org.uk.

How to apply

To apply please complete the online application form below before the stated application deadline. We ask that all student applications are accompanied by a recommendation from a teacher (or other responsible adult who knows the student well). Teachers looking to submit their recommendations should complete the Teacher Recommendation form.

Deadline for applications is 9am on Monday 9 February 2026. All applicants should hear if their application has been successful or not within 3 weeks of the deadline passing. This will allow successful applicants as much time as possible to arrange accommodation for yourselves if it is required.

Our Science Summer School is a subsidised programme and thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’re able to make this opportunity accessible to as many young people as possible.

To help us continue offering this valuable experience, we invite attendees and their families to consider making an optional donation of £5, or whatever amount feels comfortable, towards the cost of the programme. Every contribution, large or small, makes a real difference and helps us open the door to future conservationists and those passionate about the natural world. Further details on how to donate will be shared once your place has been confirmed.

Please note that accommodation is not included in the programme fee. We recommend arranging this as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Where can I apply from?

This course is for young people aged 16 – 18 (pupils who are just finishing S4 – S6 in Scotland). Free places are not restricted to local learners and we accept many applicants from across the globe every year.

Can I attend again?

Please do not apply if you have attended the Science Summer School before in previous years.

Is it curriculum linked?

Science Summer School is ideal for complementing learning within Higher and Advanced Higher Biology curriculums as well as for preparing for further education within colleges and universities.

What will we do?

Regarding content, learners can expect to explore topics including animal behaviour, welfare, genetic management, veterinary science, ecology and conservation. Learners will participate in designing and conducting scientific research, analysis and presentation using an assigned animal group in the zoo. Learners can expect to develop useful transferable skills including independent and team-based working skills, problem solving, time management, public speaking and PowerPoint design skills. There is also a significant use of IT as part of the course.

Accommodation

Please note we cannot provide accommodation. This is not a residential course. If you are unable to commute daily to the applied for location, you will need to arrange accommodation yourself.

Hard work?

Which we try to ensure we create a memorable and fun experience for learners, the week contains a heavy academic work load concentrating on non-invasive, observational animal research/science. Students will NOT be working directly with animals.

Cancellation policy

Whilst the course is free to attend during the advertised weeks, there is an estimated cost of £195.00 per learner in providing this programme. A late cancellation fee of £50.00 may be applied to successful applicants who withdraw within 4 weeks of the course start date.

Catering

The students would be expected to bring their own packed lunches each day but drinks and biscuits will be provided at breaks.

Friday afternoon presentations

On the last day it will be possible for teachers and family to come along and listen to what the students have done during the week at our Science Summer School Friday Presentations.

What if I can't attend onsite?

If you love the idea of this course but are unable to physically attend due to logistical issues, perhaps you would be interested in our distance learning course, Zoo Studies (16 –18).
