The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) has shared the first photos of a tiny baby L’Hoest’s monkey born at Edinburgh Zoo to parents Sheli and Jamal. Born on 8 May 2023, the youngster will receive their first health checks from expert vets at the wildlife conservation charity in the coming weeks and will be named by keepers shortly after.

The little one is still clinging on tight to mum but is doing extremely well and growing bigger and more confident every day. Visitors will be able to spot mum and baby with the rest of the group exploring their enclosure at Edinburgh Zoo.

Sheli and Jamal previously welcomed older brother Butembo in 2020.

L’Hoest’s monkeys are native to small areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. Babies are born with orange fur, which darkens to black at around three months old.
