The first shipment of magical lanterns produced by artisans in Sichuan, China, have arrived at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo as it prepares to become home to hundreds of mythical creatures this winter.

The lanterns travelled over 5,000 miles by boat and are set to become part of The Giant Lanterns of China, a 50-night extravaganza with over 450 gigantic handmade lanterns inspired by mythical creatures from Scottish and Chinese folklore including unicorns, faeries, bogles and the magnificent winged tiger.

The festival is inspired by the Scottish tradition of storytelling, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s (RZSS) worldwide animal conservation work and the cultural heritage of Sichuan – where the Zoo’s resident giant pandas were born.
