Volunteer

Do you have an interest in wildlife and conservation? Can you share your knowledge and enthusiasm with a wide variety of people? Can you commit to regular volunteering?

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland is very proud of our 75+ volunteers as they help us with our conservation and education programmes throughout the year. We are now looking for new volunteers to help us with our mission of inspiring and exciting our visitors with the wonder of living animals and promoting the conservation of species and habitats.

Working in a voluntary capacity for The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland will suit people of all ages who wish to broaden their interests, make new friends or learn new skills.

To be an Edinburgh Zoo Volunteer you must:

• Be 18 years old or over
• Be genuinely interested in wildlife and conservation.
• Be prepared to attend training sessions from October - March.
• Join the Society as a member, on completion of training.
• Be prepared to commit 50 hours per year to volunteering.

Volunteering Activities

• Conduct Close Encounters (animal handling classes) for Zoo visitors.
• Supervise the Discovery Centre, our family interactive centre.
• Man our touch tables of animal biofacts.
• Operate our brass rubbing activities.
• Help with the production of sponsorship and membership packs.
• Join our Volunteer Speakers’ Club and give talks about the Zoo to outside groups, clubs etc.
• Assist with events such as Summer School. 

Please note this does not include working directly with the animals.
