Whiten_in_gamba

Professor Andrew Whiten of St Andrews University will be talking about the cultures of monkeys and apes, covering discoveries from the wild and at the zoo. The lecture will look at social learning and cultures in wild chimpanzees in the Budongo Forest and vervet monkeys at our South Africa field site and in Living Links and the Budongo Trail at Edinburgh Zoo.

Andrew Whiten is Professor of Evolutionary and Developmental Psychology and Wardlaw Professor of Psychology at the University of St Andrews. Internationally recognised for his research in primate behaviour and cognition, he is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the British Academy. He is the founding and current Director of the ‘Living Links to Human Evolution’ Primate Research Centre in Edinburgh Zoo, which opened in 2008. His special scientific interests lie in social learning, traditions and culture in primates such as the capuchins and squirrel monkeys of Living Links, and wild baboons, chimpanzees and vervet monkeys in Africa.

Tea and Coffee will be served between 7.00pm and 7.30pm, before the talk itself starts at 7.30pm. The event will finish at 9pm.

Tickets cost £5 for members and £7 for non-members.
