Monthly Guide: August

August is great month to be visiting us here at Edinburgh Zoo, we have some exciting new facilities in the park as well as new animals arrivals and events. Please find below our guide to some of this months highlights:

Brilliant Birds

Brilliant birds is our new walkthrough aviary in the old Rainbow Landings building. This exhibit showcases rare and exotic species from around the world, including the Bali Starling, Violet Turaco and Nicobar pigeon.

So visitors can learn more about the various birds there will be a daily talk at 3.30pm. Find out more here.

Baginda - Our New Female Sumatran Tiger

Baginda, our new female Sumatran Tiger recently arrived from Benidorm. Born in 2003 she will hopefully become a suitable mate for Tibor. Although, Tibor and Baginda are currently being housed separately we are hoping to introduce them in the near future. Find out more about our Sumatran Tigers here.

Egyptian Vultures

Two Egyptian Vultures have recently arrived from Sofia, in Bulgaria. Although widely distributed across southern Europe, northern Africa and southwestern Asia, their numbers are in decline and are now classed by IUCN as endangered. Find out more about these beautiful birds here.

BBC Afterlife

Later this month BBC Afterlife (a unique combination of television programme and public exhibit) will be on display in the Budongo Lecture Theatre. Various items will be left to rot in a large glass box and the project will follow the process of decay as moulds, bacteria and waves of insects move in and take over. There may be opportunities for audience participation in experiments, events and talks.

New Arrivals

August gives our visitors an opportunity to see some of our young animals and new arrivals around the Zoo. Our penguins chicks are starting to resemble their parents and have been moved to their creche, we have baby Rock Hyrax darting around their rocky caves, baby ant-eaters, a baby L'hoest Monkey, Zebra foals and many more.

New Facilites - Eateries, Entrance and Gift Shop!

The last few months have seen some fantastic upgrades to many of our facilities here at Edinburgh Zoo. We have redeveloped our two main eateries - Grasslands and Jungle Food Court. We have a beautiful new front entrance to welcome you, and a new gift shop, selling everything from Zoo-veneirs to fair trade products.

...all of our other attractions such as the Budongo Trail, Penguin Parade, and Living Links, and the rest of our animal collection. This includes rhinos, koalas, sea lions, parrots, hunting dogs, tigers, lions, black stork, tapir, bongos, jaguar, pygmy hippos, sun bears....
