RZSS Animal Hospital Appeal

You don’t need to be a Vet to Help for Endangered Species!

web_image1Our top priority is our animals. And with your help we can deliver a much needed renovation to Edinburgh Zoo’s on-site Animal Hospital.

Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s (RZSS) Animal Hospital facility requires urgent assistance to help ensure the highest standard of animal care is maintained.

The hospital’s structure itself is sound, but new veterinary standards demand a modernisation of the facility and its key surgical and research areas, including; incubation, x-ray, post mortem, quarantine and store room departments.

But the area in need of the greatest attention sits at the very core of the facility; the life-saving Animal Emergency Room (ER) operating theatre.

Meet the Medical Team

web_image1 Our world class veterinary team of Simon Girling, Romain Pizzi and Donna Brown have performed a variety of complex and ground-breaking procedures including; laparoscopic surgery on bush-dogs, diagnosing gastrointestinal problems and even repairing the upper beak on a white naped crane who could no longer feed properly.

Romain remains the only Veterinary Surgeon in the UK specializing in keyhole surgery of zoo and wildlife species. And both Simon and Romain are Recognised Specialists in Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, while Donna is a skilled veterinary nurse who has been working with exotic species for nearly a decade.

Their roles encompass in-situ and ex-situ veterinary care, as well as logistical and scientific support for RZSS’ global conservation projects ranging from the Scottish Beaver Trials in Knapdale and the sun-bear project in Vietnam and Cambodia, to the renowned Budongo Conservation Field Station in Uganda.

An All-Inclusive E.R.

web_image1Even with a healthy diet, plenty of exercise and enrichment animals, like humans, get sick.

To date, larger animals such as tigers, hippos and sun bears have been treated in their exhibits or holding areas because the E.R. could not accommodate them. Surgeries have also become a problem, leading to stressful, time-consuming, costly and sometimes life-threatening transport to external sites. The new Animal Hospital will allow for first class veterinary care on-site for all of our exotic and endangered animals.

But stringent Government support means your assistance is now urgently needed to help raise £25,000 and make the new Animal Hospital and Animal E.R. possible.

With your help we can make this possible. Please make a donation today.

Why support RZSS?

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland has shown not only what zoos can be, but also what they should be’.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) is one of Scotland’s leading charities devoted to the conservation of endangered species and their habitats.  Established in 1909, we own Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park.

Our charitable work includes breeding programmes for threatened species, providing unique learning experiences for visitors and schools and supporting conservation and research projects across the globe, including Scotland.

As a charity we rely on donations and fundraising to further our work to improve our parks, expand our collection and fund our conservation, education and research projects.
