It’s that time of year again when we all get on our lab coats, Coke bottle glasses and get nerdy with the Science Festival takeover at the Zoo. But instead of dry science lessons with professors wearing tweed jackets with elbow pads, we’re creating many fun events for all audiences – including games and trails for kids, our very first promenade theatre production and even a worldwide Gastrofest adventure.
Dr Stirlingshire’s Discovery
We’re very excited to be teaming up with Grid Iron, Lung Ha and the Royal Lyceum Theatre, to bring you a brand new bespoke theatre production this Easter. From 1st to 9th April, we’ll be welcoming a cast of actors to take us on a journey around the Zoo, with different scenes and new characters to meet along the way. Aimed at a family audience, this production is all about Cryptozoology – all those mythical creatures like the Yeti and Loch Ness Monster that don’t exist… or do they? Dr Stirlingshire is uncovering her latest discovery at the Zoo, along with her brother Henry (who also happens to be the Zoo Manager in this fictional world).
Alongside the crazy capers of this mythical creature, you’ll learn a bit about the Zoo and wider conservation issues. Linking the arts with science is an important way we can engage new audiences with important conservation messages.
Pop up Science
Join us every day of the Science Festival for fun animal science activities for families. Each day between 11am and 3pm we’ll have a different expert talking about their subject areas, such as how thermal imaging can be used to assess the health of an animal and there will be the opportunity to meet our Beekeeper in Residence. Find out how GPS devices are used in conservation projects by following a geocash trail and discovering a prize at the end. Discover how you weigh a chimpanzee and see the Zoo in 360 degree virtual reality.
Feeding Time at the Zoo
Science can’t be done on an empty stomach! Join us for a Gastrofest adventure as we travel around the world. Four animals, four countries, four conservation stories. We’ll visit different animals, taste food associated with the country they are from, and hear from the conservation team about the work they do in that country.
