Zoo babies p-p-pick up a penguin

New animal births were put to one side today as Edinburgh Zoo celebrated a bumper few years for human births instead. With 18 children born since 2007 to parents who now work at the Zoo, the Zoo’s breeding success with animals seems to have rubbed off on its staff! Now as part of the Zoo’s campaign to recruit more animal adopters culminating in Adoption Awareness Day at Edinburgh Zoo on Saturday 17 July, these children, all aged three years and under, have been given an extra special award – a gentoo penguin chick named after each of them.

The latest arrivals at Edinburgh Zoo went on public display today (7 July 2010). Having flown over 6,000 miles from Cambodia, the two Malayan sun bear brothers, named Rotana and Somnang, are the only bears of their kind in Scotland and are one of the rarest in the world.

Three little pigs hog the limelight at Edinburgh Zoo

Keepers at Edinburgh Zoo are celebrating the birth of three male red river hog piglets. Born on 6 June 2010, red river hogs have been at Edinburgh Zoo since 2004 and this is the second year they have bred successfully.

Two New Beavers for Wild Beaver Trial

Yesterday [Wednesday 23 June] in Mid-Argyll, two beavers were released in Knapdale Forest as part of the five-year Scottish Beaver Trial (SBT). The male and female, which were captured in Norway, bring the number of resident wild beavers in Scotland to nine.

Hey Joey, Hop Off!

A new addition to the swamp wallabies can now be seen at Edinburgh Zoo. Born in September last year and the first to be born of this species at the Zoo, the baby wallaby or joey was hidden in his mother’s pouch for eight to nine months before emerging.

Father’s fight to breed could prove deadly

As Father’s Day approaches on 20 June, one species at Edinburgh Zoo faces a potentially lethal battle in his quest to become a Dad. The southern cassowary, a large flightless bird from the tropics of New Guinea and Australia, has to judge whether it is the right time to approach the female or face a vicious and potentially lethal rebuff to his advances. And if that’s not enough, he gets landed with childcare afterwards!

He's Not Heavy, He's My Brother!

Hot on the hooves of Samir, the 18-month greater one-horned male Indian rhino who arrived at Edinburgh Zoo on 5 May, Bertus, a second rhino arrived on 1 June from Rotterdam Zoo, and in the last week has been successfully introduced to his new home and his new ‘flat mate’.

The Zoo gives children a night to remember

Edinburgh Zoo opened its doors on Friday (4 June) night to over 1500 bereaved, long term, terminally ill and special needs children and their carers as part of a free evening called Dreamnight designed to give kids a night to remember away from prying eyes.
