Clear Reasons for Glasswalk at the Zoo

Fundraising glasswalk at Edinburgh Zoo

18 June 2010 - The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), the charity that owns Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park, is looking for volunteers to take part in a charity fundraising glasswalk challenge on Friday 30 July. Participants will be required to walk barefoot across 20ft of broken glass and will help raise vital funds to support animal conservation and research.

This is the third year RZSS has run this kind of event; last year a firewalk was held and 38 participants raised over £8,000. Full training is given and previous glasswalk participants found the experience ‘empowering’,’ inspirational’ and said it felt like ‘walking on cornflakes’.

Musselburgh-based, Christine Sallie, who has already signed up for the event, said there are many different reasons why people may choose to take part but, for her, making a difference for animals was the real motivator.

“I am doing the glasswalk because it is for a great cause and I love animals! RZSS does some great work. A lot of people don’t realise that the Zoo is a registered charity and so walking over some broken glass is the least I could do to support my local charity and help protect the future of endangered animals!”

With 95% of mammals in Edinburgh Zoo classed as endangered or critically endangered in the wild, RZSS is a recognised international centre for animal conservation, education and research. The Society works across four continents to breed, research, protect and reintroduce species. With little government support, RZSS relies on fundraising to further its charitable work and to help protect animals at home and abroad.

Places are limited and participants need to register for the event by 9 July 2010. The walk is free but participants are required to a raise a minimum of £150 sponsorship for RZSS. To take part you must be aged 18 years or over. For more information contact the Development Department on 0131 314 0334 or email development@rzss.org.uk
