Zoo to Host Climate Change Conference
Edinburgh Zoo is welcoming over 200 school children over the next two days to discuss climate change and the impact it is having on our planet. The Global Classroom Conference will take the form of a series of talks and workshops to encourage students to consider issues relating to climate change and discuss the best ways to cope with our changing environment.
The conference has been targeted at upper secondary school pupils who will hear from conservation experts including Terri Cunningham, Community Officer for RSPB, as well as from comedian Mark Stevenson, from Flow Associates who will be discussing how to communicate the science of climate change.
This is the 4th Global Classroom Conference run by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), the charity that owns Edinburgh Zoo and Highland Wildlife Park. Previous topics have covered issues such as global citizenship and local wildlife and habitats.
Stephen Woollard, Education & Interpretation Manager RZSS, said:
“Our global classroom initiative is a great opportunity for young people to find out about climate change and, through interactive workshops, they can develop skills that will help to tackle this major threat on our planet.
This year we are particularly keen to encourage students to develop science communication skills. We believe using a comedian for this will engage them in a way that makes them think differently and recognise that although conservation science is serious, it can be fun too.”
