A walk on the wild side
Edinburgh Zoo is inviting brave members of the public to walk across fire, all in the name of conservation! The Firewalk is scheduled to take place on the evening of 3 October and will see sponsored individuals walking across 20 feet of embers burning at 1200 degrees Fahrenheit.
The organisation facilitating the event will run a two hour training session before the Firewalk. The training will be a motivational psychology seminar, designed to equip the participants with the resources to walk unharmed across the burning embers. Previous participants have found the experience to be empowering and inspirational and the benefits of the training can extend into their daily life, with an increased awareness of how to achieve their goals.
Funds raised from this event will be donated to the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), the charity that owns Edinburgh Zoo and Highland Wildlife Park. This income will help care for the animals in both parks as well as animals in the wild, through the numerous conservation projects RZSS is involved in.
Zoe Mobey, Development Manager for RZSS and future participant in the Firewalk, said:
“This is the first time we have had a Firewalk event at the Zoo and everyone involved is really looking forward to it. We have 40 spaces left and are keen for members of the public to fill them up as quickly as possible.
If anyone is interested or would just like some further information about the event, please call us on 0131 314 0374 or visit www.rzss.org.uk.
Editor’s Notes
About the Firewalk
- The Firewalk will be run by Blaze Fire Walk Challenge. The Blaze instructor overseeing the event has participated in over 200 Firewalks and has a 100% safety record.
- Participants will register at 6.30pm, with the 2 hour training session beginning at 7pm. The Firewalk will begin at 9.10pm and is expected to last approximately 20 minutes. All participants will receive a certificate of their achievement.
- All participants must be aged 18 or over.
About Sponsorship and RZSS
- The Firewalk is just one of many fundraising events organised events. Previous events have included an abseil off the Forth Road Bridge and a Ladies Driving Challenge. Fundraising events such as these have so far raised £12,500 for the Society this year.
- In order to take part in the event, participants must raise a minimum of £150 sponsorship.
- Funds raised through sponsorship can help the Society in many ways:
- £10 pays for the cost of feeding a snow monkey at Highland Wildlife Park
- £40 keeps one of the koalas in eucalyptus leaves for one day
- £300 pays for vital road maintenance, which provides access to the Budongo Conservation Field Station in Uganda.
- £550 buys a ton of fish for our penguins who get through 36 tons a year!
- Edinburgh Zoo is owned by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, a registered
charity, charity no SC004064.
