'Wild' Christmas Gifts

Edinburgh Zoo has launched its ‘Wild Christmas Gifts’ campaign to promote alternative gift ideas for thoughtful shoppers over the festive winter season.

Edinburgh Zoo has over 100 different species in its animal collection, many of which are rare and endangered in the wild. By taking out animal adoption, adopters will be contributing to the cost of keeping and feeding the animals in the Zoo’s care. Adopters will also be contributing to conservation projects in the wild that are funded by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, the charity that owns Edinburgh Zoo.

Animal adoption start from £40 and adopters can expect to receive invitations to attend special adopter events where they can meet some of the animals at the Zoo as well as receive an adoption pack including a certificate and fact sheet about their chosen species.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland also offers annual membership which is an effective ways to help support one of Scotland’s largest animal conservation charities and also offers unlimited admission to the Zoo and Highland Wildlife Park for one year.

For less than £1 a week, members can visit Edinburgh Zoo and Highland Wildlife Park 365 days of the year, making it a wonderful way to spend time with family and friends in safe, exciting, educational and fun surroundings.

Zoé Mobey, Development Manager at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland said:

“The period leading up to Christmas is always the busiest time for our Membership and Animal Adoption Team. Traditionally during the festive season our most popular animals to be adopted are the penguins and the polar bear, but we would also appeal to people to consider the other species with no adopters, such as our bleeding heart doves, blue-crowned laughing thrushes or our rhinoceros iguanas.

The gifts of Animal Adoption and RZSS membership seem to appeal to the public because they are unusual gift ideas that contribute to caring for endangered species and last a whole year.”

The deadline for ordering an animal adoption in time for Christmas is Friday 5 December.
