Charles Darwin: A Celebration in Stamps

Written by Alexandra Robb and Mark Norris

Alexandra (Sandie) Robb is a Senior Education Officer at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland and Mark Norris is Education Manager at Newquay Zoo. They have co-written this book which is available free to schools on request.

The book explains about the man Charles Darwin, his theory of evolution, the Voyage of the Beagle and other related items and is beautifully illustrated by postage stamps.  There is also an associated weblog which contains additional information and activities which can be used in schools and education: http://darwin200stampzoo.wordpress.com

The book has been funded by the Association of Scottish Philatelic Societies and the Scottish Philatelic Trade Association.

Why Darwin on Stamps?

Darwin, it was claimed during his 200th birthday celebrations, has featured on more different stamps than any other person worldwide, apart from the reigning Kings and Queens of Britain. So it seems only appropriate to collect some of these stamps together to celebrate a remarkable life and times, along with a journey on the HMS Beagle that has changed for many the way we see ourselves and our world.

The purpose of the book is to show how the collecting of postage stamps can help students of all ages to discover and learn.

Many books have been written on Charles Darwin and many have told the history of the postal system. It is not the authors' wish to introduce anything more to this well-researched area, but to show how a thematic stamp collection can inspire and beautifully illustrate.
