Endangered Asia Adult Class - Winter 2012

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is an introductory course into the conservation work that is being carried out with a variety of species in Asia and the Far East. The IUCN have identified animals in Asia as being at particular risk through a combination of factors, such as illegal trade, hunting and habitat loss.  We will be highlighting these issues through discussions on conservation genetics, captive breeding programmes and wildlife veterinary care. We are offering this course to mark the arrival of our giant pandas and the agreements amongst China and the UK in promoting conservation education and research of the natural world.

Some of the featured species – Giant pandas, Sun bears, Amur leopards, Indian rhinoceros, Malayan Tapir.

GENERAL APPROACH TO THE COURSE:

Power point presentations and tours around the zoo. Some activities or workshops may be incorporated as well.

MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENTS:

Appropriate clothing and foot wear to be worn for walking around the zoo. Some students may like to take notes so notebooks and pens if desired.
