Amazing Asia Summer School 2012
Information
Summer School 2012 will be a celebration of the amazing wildlife and culture of Asia. During the summer school children will discover the range of Asian animals found at Edinburgh Zoo, as well as exploring the diversity of plant and animal species, cultures, languages, arts and music to be found in the enormous continent of Asia.
Summer school will run the weeks commencing the 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd of July 2012. Children aged 6 – 14 years can be registered to attend a week-long course of animal related activities, from 9am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday. Activities include arts and crafts, animal encounters, games, zoo trails, drama, keeper encounters, music and much more!
The activities are fun and varied and children will spend around 50% of their time out in the zoo. Children will also have the opportunity to take part in special animal activities such as animal handling and creating enrichment (a toy!) for one of the animals. However, please be aware that due to health and safety restrictions, children will not be able to enter any animal enclosures or take part in the animal care routine.
We have places for 100 children to attend each week. Every week, children are separated into four age group classes:
• 6 – 7 year olds
• 8 – 9 year olds
• 10 – 11 year olds
• 12 – 14 year olds
Each class is comprised of 25 children and is led by two teachers. Children are cared for during their break and lunchtimes by experienced Education staff.
Morning snacks and drinks are provided every day of the week and a themed buffet lunch is provided each Friday. Children are required to bring their own packed lunches Monday to Thursday.
The week’s activities culminate on the Friday in a show prepared by the children. One parent per child will be invited to come along and watch. Children are also given a goody bag of souvenirs to take home with them.
The cost is £135 per child. When registering two or more related children, living at the same address, the cost for each additional child is £120.
How to Book
Registration will take place by postal application. If you wish to register your child(ren) please download the Summer School registration form and complete one copy for each child.

THIS FORM SHOULD ARRIVE BEFORE 2nd March 2012. However, NO applications will be processed or opened prior to 2nd March. (No priority is given to applications received early).
Due to the large volume of applications we will receive, we are unable to provide a confirmation of receipt.
Please state your first, second and third preference for the week you would like your child(ren) to attend. We will also strive to place siblings, and friends wishing to attend together, on the same week. Please provide us with the names of any children with whom you would like your child(ren) to attend summer school.
We will contact you by 16th March, to advise you on whether your child(ren) have been successfully registered or whether they have been placed on a waiting list. Please provide an email address (preferred) or contact telephone number for this purpose.
We will request full payment once we have advised you of your child(ren’s) place(s). Booking will not be completed until full payment has been received. Full payment must be received by the 2nd April. After this date, unpaid places will be offered to children on the waiting list.
Payment can be made in the following ways:
• Cheques (made payable to ‘RZSS’) to be sent to the address above (Preferred).
• Card payments, made by phoning the Education department (0131 314 0324) with card details.
Bookings can be made after 2nd March (where places are still available) and will be handled strictly on a first come, first served basis.
