Research at the Zoo
Zoos must support long-term, sustainable populations of species and contribute not only to their health and welfare but also to the conservation of that species and its habitat in the wild.
It is important to note that much of the research carried out in zoos plays a vital role in the conservation of species in the wild. Due to the nature of the zoo environment, we offer a unique opportunity for studying animals up close, and for conducting research which would be extremely difficult or impossible in the field such as reproductive monitoring, nutrition studies and physiological investigations. Zoo vets can determine suitable doses of drugs for a species in captivity, and this information can then be used in the wild situation to help promote good health amongst wild populations.
For any students or researchers who are interested in conducting research in one of the RZSS collections we strongly recommend that you first read the guidelines on zoo research that have been produced by the BIAZA Research Group.
