Penguins Rock - Now Open!
Penguins Rock, our new revamped outdoor penguin pool is now open!
The main pool is Europe's largest outdoor penguin pool at 65 metres long and 3.5 metres deep at it's deepest point, containing 1.2 million litres of water.
The new enclosure features lowered perimeters to help make visitors feel closer to the birds. Enhanced viewing areas have also been created with interactive interpretation using feathers, nesting rings, parasols and eggs. Mock sandy beaches and rocky areas add great visual touches, but also provide the birds with different textures that are perfect for their feet. Visitors can also see the birds have fun with a beautiful stone waterfall feature, a water shoot in the shallow end of the pool, and a diving board made out of carved rock.

Penguin Parade
The world famous Penguin Parade runs everyday at 2.15pm outside the Penguins Rock pool.
* As with all of our interactive animal sessions, the participation of the animals is strictly on a voluntary basis. For this reason, it is impossible to say how many penguins, if any, will choose to join the parade on any given day. In addition, the penguin parade may be cancelled due to inclement weather, icy conditions, or other circumstances beyond Edinburgh Zoo's control.
Penguins Rock Appeal
Our outdoor penguin enclosure has been well loved and visited over the last 60 years. For many, it represents Edinburgh Zoo, with its large colony of kings, gentoos and rockhoppers and their world famous penguin parade. However, was no longer fit for purpose and we asked for your help to bring it back into shape.
The work involved in creating Penguins Rock, our new enclosure, was extensive. With total project costs of around £750,000 we asked our supporters to help us raise £100,000 towards this. The remaining funding was provided by charitable trusts, grants, company sponsors and internal funds.
We are pleased to say our Penguins Rock Appeal raised a fantastic £138,326! (not calculating gift aid) Your generosity has helped to give our penguins a 21st Century home. On behalf of our colony and Edinburgh Zoo: Thank You!
Penguin Parade Dedication Scheme
Thank you to everyone who chose to support the colony through our dedication scheme. Almost 100 penguin footprint bricks will now grace the new penguin parade route and be a lasting reminder of the goodwill enjoyed by our colony.
