Emma

Emma climbing in the outdoor section of Edinburgh Zoo's Budong Trail exhibit

Adopt a chimp!Born: 15 August 1981

Appearance: Emma is our largest chimp. She has a loose flap of skin under her chin from when she had an infection in her air-sac which required medical treatment.

History and character: Emma was born in captivity at Whipsnade Zoo, and came to Edinburgh in 1991. She is also a mother within the group; her son is Qafzeh.

Again, like many mothers, she is usually the first to back him up or come to his aid. She is probably the most dominant female within the group, and can often be seen displaying like the males! Her dominancy was key to Qafzeh’s rise to alpha male, as the other individuals respect her so much, and she is a vital ally for Qafzeh in his recent challenge by Kindia
