A Brilliant Bonus - Now Open!

Our Brilliant Birds exhibit has a selection of amphibians and invertebrates housed in the entrance hall before the main aviary. Please note this area is changed regularly.

Some of the animals you can expect to see are:

  • Frog tank, including blue poison arrow frogs and phantasmal dart frogs.  blue pa frog cut out
  • Sri Lanka mantis
  • Leaf cutter ants
  • Deaths head cockroach
  • Macleays Spectre stick insects
  • Jungle nymph
  • Giant African land snails
  • Katydid
  • Madagascan hissing cockroaches
  • Yellow footed tortoise
  • Mixed beetle tank, including, sun beetles and African scarab beetles
  • Partula (Polynesian tree snails)

Brilliant Birds 

Brilliant birds is our new walkthrough aviary in the old Rainbow Landings building. This exhibit will showcase exotic species from around the world, including the Bali Starling, Violet Turaco and Nicobar pigeon.

So visitors can learn more about the various birds there will be a daily talk at 3.30pm.

There will be a series of events taking place from the Monday 18 July to celebrate, suitable for all the family.

Violet Turaco
Violet turacos (Musophaga violacea) are also known as violaceous turacos or violet plantain-eaters. They are found in Chad, Ghana, Niger, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Senegal and Cameroon living in tropical savannas, wetlands, woodlands and forests.

Blue Faced Honeyeater
The blue-faced honey eater (Entomyzon cyanotis) is found in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Always living close to a water source, they can be found in banana plantations, coastal heaths, farmland, forests, gardens, golf courses, mangroves, orchards, parks and woodlands.

Bleeding Heart Pigeon
The Luzon bleeding heart pigeon (Gallicolumba luzonica) is only found in the Philippines inhabiting the islands of Luzon and Polillo. They live in tropical, dense rain forests.

Green Winged Dove
The green-winged dove (Chalcophaps indica) is known by a variety of other names such as the emerald dove, green-backed dove or green pigeon. They are found in Australia, India, New Guinea, the Philippines and Sri Lanka living in dense, wet woodlands and rainforests.

Nicobar Pigeon
Nicobar pigeons (Caloenas nicobarica) live in the lowland tropical forests and mangroves of Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Thailand, Vietnam and of course the Nicobar Islands.

Bali Starling
As the name suggests, the Bali starling (Leucopsar rothschildi) is endemic to Bali, Indonesia. Adopted as their national bird, it is widely regarded as the most beautiful of the mynah family. At approximately 25cm long, they are identifiable by their pure white feathers and the blue skin around their eyes.

Cochin-Chinese red junglefowl
There are five sub-species of red jungle fowl found throughout Asia and they are all the direct ancestors of domestic chickens. Cochin-Chinese red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus gallus) are found in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam living in forests, mangroves, plantations and scrublands.
