Red titi monkeys at Edinburgh Zoo

Edinburgh Zoo has two red titi monkeys: a male named Chandler, who was born in 2001, and a female named Tangoa who was born in 2004. Tangoa was brought to Edinburgh Zoo from Romagne, France in June 2008 to pair up with Chandler. The two are very well bonded together, and can be seen sitting with their tails entwined when huddled together. We hope that the pair will start to produce youngsters very soon.

Red titi Monkeys in the wild
In the wild, red titi monkeys (Callicebus cupreus cupreus) would eat fruit as 47 percent of their diet, leaves as 28 percent, insects as 15 percent, and flowers as 2 percent. Figs and brosimum rubescens are also important to the titi monkey’s diet. The titi monkeys at Edinburgh Zoo are given a varied diet of pellets, fruit, vegetables, insects, fresh leaves, and sometimes flowers.
The red titi monkey comes from the rainforests of Brazil and Peru. They are diurnal (active during the day) and arboreal (tree dwellers). They like to forage in the lower parts of the forest canopy. Red titi monkeys are sometimes seen with other species of titi monkeys, feeding and foraging. At night they sleep in the trees in vine tangles. The same trees are used many times for sleeping.
