Malayan Black Hornbills at Edinburgh Zoo

There is currently one Malayan black hornbill held at Edinburgh Zoo. Hatched in 2009, it came here from Burger’s Zoo in the Netherlands in March of 2010 and is part of the European Studbook for the species, held by Zoological Society of London. We hope to acquire a female in the near future to form a breeding pair.

Where it can be found at Edinburgh Zoo

The Malayan Black Hornbill can be found in the East Aviaries, located to the rear of the sun bear enclosure.

Malayan Black Hornbill

The Malayan black hornbill has a long down-curved heavy bill which is usually brightly coloured and sometimes has a casque on the upper mandible. They commonly eat fruit and insects, with the occasional small animal. They cannot swallow food caught at the tip of their beak, so they toss it back with a jerk of the head to the throat. Hornbills have a harsh creaking cry and generally travel in pairs or small family groups. Out of breeding season some larger flocks may form at roosting sites.

This species is classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN red list. This is due to the high rate of deforestation within the region. Habitat loss has driven it to the verge of extinction in Thailand.
