They have a red crest on the top of their head, yellow beak and ring of yellow skin around their eyes. The rest of the bird is covered in metallic blue feathers apart from the underside of their wings which are red. Males and females are identical in appearance.
They typically live in small flocks spending their days feeding and then nesting close to each other at night. The feed on berries, flowers, fruit, insects, plants, shoots and snails.
Where it can be found at Edinburgh Zoo
Here at Edinburgh Zoo we have a pair of Lady Ross's turaco that can be found in the aviaries at the top of the rhino enclosure. The male arrived in June 2009 and the female came to us in July 2009. In 2010 they had 3 chicks that were hand-reared by the keepers and are currently off-show.
