Corn snakes in the wild
The corn snake (Elaphe guttata), also known as the red rat snake, is native to North America. Its range includes most of the east coast of the United States, from southern New Jersey all the way down to Florida. They can also be found as far west as Texas. Corn snakes are the most abundant snake species in the south-eastern United States.
In the wild, corn snakes tend to be most active at night. Their preferred habitats include overgrown fields, disused farmland, forests and trees.
The diet of the corn snake consists mainly of rodents such as rats, mice and bats. They kill their prey by constriction, and eat every few days. When these snakes are young and small, they also eat small lizards and frogs.
The number of corn snakes in the wild is stable, and the species is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as a species of Least Concern.
