Modernising Edinburgh Zoo

At the end of 2009, the City of Edinburgh Council granted RZSS approval to develop plans for housing on surplus land to the west of Edinburgh Zoo. For a number of reasons, this area is not suitable for developing a modern, world-class Edinburgh Zoo.
A separate part of discussions with the Council (and outwith the planning process) relates to a land exchange whereby RZSS-owned land at the top north-east side of Edinburgh Zoo would be swapped for Council-owned land further down Corstorphine Hill on the east side. This arrangement would help us to meet health and safety and disability legislation requirements in relation to the maximum slope acceptable and the need to provide separate routes for vehicles and pedestrians.
As a registered charity which receives no direct government funding, the capital released from sale of the surplus land and the provision of more appropriately sited land, would allow us to upgrade and improve the Zoo’s physical infrastructure. These improvements are crucial if we want to offer a word-class visitor experience in the coming years and fulfil our plans to bring animals such as giant pandas to the Zoo.
