Green Team

As Edinburgh Zoo is committed to reducing its environmental impact, we have a SHE (Safety Health & Environment) Manager and SHE Officer as well as a dedicated team to help raise awareness of green issues. Composed of staff members from across the various departments of the Zoo, the Green Team meets once a month to discuss ways to improve sustainable practices and reduce pollution and waste.
The green ambassadors that make up the team have paved the way for the ISO 14001 accreditation, as well as providing advice, feedback and suggestions from visitors and staff to the senior management.
Many positive changes have been implemented by the Green Team at the Zoo. For example; energy saving programs have been introduced on the Zoo’s PCs, helping to save electricity and reduce carbon emissions; recycling has increased enormously, especially cardboard recycling; the sea lions now only eat sustainably sourced fish accredited by the Marine Stewardship Council; and the Zoo has taken part in WWF’s Earth Hour for the past two years.
In 2010, the Green Team will review all utility use (water, gas, electricity and oil) so it can manage and set targets to reduce our consumption and reduce our carbon footprint. This is a task that will save money, thus allowing more support for RZSS’ conservation efforts around the world. Do you have any tips or suggestions to help us?
