IUCN UK Secretariat

RZSS Chairman, Donald Emslie (left) unveils the plaque announcing the news along with IUCN UK Chairman Chris Mahon.
In 2009, RZSS was chosen to become the official Secretariat for the UK National Committee of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The IUCN is the world’s first global environmental organization and is now the largest global conservation network. As part of their work, IUCN is responsible for producing the “Red List”, which identifies all species under threat from extinction in the wild.
In their role as Secretariat, RZSS will help to develop and implement the IUCN conservation strategies in the UK, its Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies.
RZSS will also work in partnership with a range of organizations and individuals to encourage policy makers in UK government to engage with and contribute to the IUCN mission. This is the first time that the Secretariat will be based in Scotland.
It is also the first time that a Zoological Society has held this position, which was awarded to RZSS after a competitive tendering process. RZSS will host the IUCN UK Secretariat until 2012.
