When Are the Giant Pandas Arriving?
Although we have signed a Letter of Intent, there is still a long way to go before we can state that giant pandas are definitely coming and when.
We are optimistic however that this process will be a relatively smooth one and it is hoped that we will have giant pandas in the near future.
What is a Letter of Intent?
A Letter of Intent is an official document drawn up and signed by two parties that outlines an initial agreement and provides a framework for a more detailed agreement to be negotiated later. There are provisions that both parties have to consent to and commit to deliver.
Will the Earthquake in May Affect their Arrival?
The Wolong Breeding Centre was unfortunately near the epicentre of the earthquake that struck in May 2008. The Centre was left devastated and several members of staff lost their lives. The Centre will be rebuilt in an area less prone to earthquakes.
The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland was the first zoological society in the world to respond to the relief efforts. We sent £10,000 and satellite communication equipment. We will continue to help in any way we can.
It is not yet known how this will affect the final decision or the timing of giant pandas coming to Scotland.
