Nils' Travels!

Nils ready to travel!

Hello, I’m Nils the king penguin! I am named after the very famous Edinburgh Zoo king penguin Sir Nils Olav who has been knighted by the Norweign king! I live in the Education Centre at the zoo. I like to spend time with all the other zoo penguins. I have a flipper band on my right flipper just like the other male penguins.

I also love to travel and I have been to many places around the world! Edinburgh Zoo helps animals by looking after them in the zoo but also helps animals out in the wild. On my travels I have visited many places where Edinburgh Zoo helps to protect wild animals.

Have a look at my diary!

vole release 09 001

I got to help release water voles into a wild near Aberfoyle this week! In the photo you can see me with the boxes of voles before they were released. In total we released 200 voles which will help re-populate the area. Water voles used to live in the area but they had gone extinct because of habitat loss and the introduction of a predator from America - the American mink. Lots of work has happened in the area so now the voles can be returned! It was great to be involved in one of the conservation projects that Edinburgh Zoo supports. Find out more about the project here!

During my trip to the Falkland Islands I also got to visit
Saunders Islands where I saw rockhopper penguins, striated caracara, black-browed albatross and huge elephant seals! In this photo you can see me with a group of king cormorants. It was here that I watched rockhopper penguins showering themselves under a freshwater waterfall!

Nils on Falklands

Wow! Here I am with wild king penguins in the Falkland Islands! I got to visit a group of 760 breeding pairs. I even spotted some king penguin chicks! I travelled around the Falklands with two Education Officers from Edinburgh Zoo. We visited lots of children telling them all about wildlife back at home in Scotland and I found out so much about wildlife in the

Here I am on my way to the Isle of Canna! I got so soaked sitting up here in the bow of the boat! I went to Canna on a mission – a mission to help trap rats which had made it across to the island and were eating the seabird eggs and chicks. Before we did that, we had to remove the Canna woodmice to keep them safe. They stayed at the zoo and the HighlandWildlifePark while all the rats were trapped then they were returned to their home. All our hard work played off because now the seabird numbers are increasing!

Forest! There are about 600 chimpanzees in the forest and money from the zoo helps to keep them safe from things like snares.  Later in the day the big male chimps were displaying around the forest drumming on buttress roots and shaking branches. Lucky for me they ignored this penguin observer.  Phew!
