How you can help

The natural world needs our help...and we need yours!  Please consider making a donation to support our conservation, education and research work, both within our parks and across the world.

Going Green!

What Edinburgh Zoo is doing:

  • We have established an environmental management system that meets the requirements of the ISO14001 environmental standard, which helps us to minimise our negative impact on the environment
  • Poo from Zoo animals is turned into compost and used to fertilise the beautiful plants around the park
  • Cardboard boxes, paper bags and other harmless items are used to make enrichment devices for the animals
  • Our keepers re-use eucalyptus leaves for chimpanzee bedding after the koalas have eaten the tips
  • We use solar panels on the otter house to warm their water and for the microphone system at the African Plains
  • Our paper and cardboard is collected and recycled
  • Out of date advertising banners are used as covers for the zoo’s compost bins
  • Before they are recycled, cardboard egg trays are used to house our crickets
  • We have an area of our intranet where zoo staff can swap and exchange items

What YOU can do at the Zoo:
  • Travel to the Zoo by public transport. Travel by Lothian buses and bring in your bus ticket for a pound off your entry to the Zoo! (valid until 30 June 2009)
  • Recycle your plastic bottles and drink cans in our recycling bins located around the Zoo
  • Buy Fairtrade products in our shop
  • Buy a chimpanzee badge or ape vine magazine in Budongo Trail. Money raised goes to the Budongo Conservation Field Station in Uganda

What YOU can do at home:
  • Switch your TV off standby when you are not using it. If everyone in the UK did this over £50 million could be saved each year!
  • When you make a cup of tea or coffee only boil the amount of water you need. If everyone did this just for one day we could save enough energy to light every UK street light the next night!
  • Recycle all the items you can, from cardboard and plastic bottles to glass and cans!
  • Save water by turning off the taps when you are brushing your teeth
  • Why not switch to a green renewable energy supplier?
  • Try out eco food shopping – buy locally produced food and items with less packaging around them
  • Take the bus or walk or cycle rather than taking your car for short journeys
